Nathan Philips Square, Toronto was the venue this year for a new Nepali Mela. While Newcastle Mela, England was getting towards the end of its first day on 27 August, Toronto, Canada was getting into action with its first Nepali Mela. Organised by the Nepalese Canadian Community Services (NCCS) this was a platform for Nepalese and non-Nepalese to experience and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Nepal. It featured an extensive array of Nepalese arts, crafts, food, and music that gave a taste of the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Nepal. This new Mela is seen as a vital opportunity for building cross cultural ties between Nepalese and non-Nepalese and enhancing the multicultural spirit of Toronto.
HILLINGDON Autistic Care and Support will be one of the charities to benefit from this year's London Mela on Sunday.
The charity works with health, education and social services to enhance the range of quality of services available to parents and carers of adults and children with autistic spectrum disorder.
The Mela, in Gunnersbury Park, Ealing, will also benefit the Sickle Cell Society, Muscular Dystrophy and St Luke's Hospice in Kenton.
Sponsor Barclays Bank will match the amount raised.
A GIANT Bollywood billboard and one of the world's biggest-selling bhangra artists in the world will be among the main attractions at this year's Edinburgh Mela festival. Organisers of the Capital's multi-cultural extravaganza have unveiled a star-studded line-up which they hope will draw record crowds to the multicultural celebration at Pilrig Park this weekend. Top bhangra musician Malkit Singh will headline the event, and a host of other artists, singers and dancers have also been confirmed for the main stages.
Punjab-born Singh has recorded smash-hit singles for some of India's most successful Bollywood films during his 20-year career. The bhangra star will replace the original headliner, hip-hop artist Rishi Rich, who pulled out earlier this year due to a mix-up over tour dates. Upcoming Yorkshire-based ska/punk band Jinx and the Pakistani boy band NRG are also due to perform at the event.
